A common method is by manually installing the patches released for the game as they usually come with a decrypted copy of the game executable. The online service stopped working sometime between 20, meaning retail discs of ZDPP protected games will not longer work after installation unless the decrypted files are retrieved through another means. Upon confirming the release date as passed, the service would respond with the decryption keys for the relevant files which allowed the local tool to decrypt them and grant user access to the game. The online service would then look up the release date for the requested game ID and validate if the date have passed.
